EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
