Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the number of new jobs created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the closure started. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for September that showed that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
