The Fast-Food Giant Takes Down AI-Generated Christmas Ad After Online Criticism.

The global fast-food chain has taken down a holiday advertisement created via Artificial Intelligence after receiving significant criticism on social media.

The brief spot was developed via AI video tools and was initially published publicly for McDonald's Netherlands on 6 December.

Viewer Response and Removal

Following its publication, commenters lambasted the use of AI in the film. Several described it as "disturbing" and "jarringly assembled".

"This incident is an valuable lesson as we examine the appropriate application of AI," stated a statement from the company.

The advert was created for McDonald's by Netherlands-based agency TBWA\Neboko and US firm The Sweetshop. It portrayed a series of scenarios that can go wrong during the Christmas break, under the tagline "the most terrible time of the year".

The Movement of AI Commercials

Campaigns that feature AI tools have become a increasing trend among large companies, particularly for the holiday season.

  • Coca-Cola has recently launched back-to-back AI-created Christmas ads.
  • Inherent Limitations: Since videos made using generative AI are more likely to degrade the more extended they are, the majority of AI video outputs tend to be about short in length.
  • Industry Concerns: The ad also raised fears about the replacement of human roles in the advertising industry, with some observers stating it could reduce opportunities for production staff.

Defense from the Creators

After the commercial being pulled, a producer's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, defended the advert.

Bridge claimed, the production process required "over a month and a half" and involved creating "countless iterations" which were then shaped in post-production "just as we would on any traditional production".

"This wasn't just an AI gimmick," she commented. "We consider it a proper commercial."

Mixed Public Reception

While the McDonald's commercial was mostly panned, the reception for some AI-generated holiday ads has been divisive.

For instance, a consecutive AI-created Christmas spot from Coca-Cola according to analysis received a significant "favorable response" from the public.

However, other businesses have also received scrutiny for using the technique in their campaigns. Italian fashion house Valentino, for example, was criticized for advertisements that critics described as "low-effort" and "disturbing".

The situation underscores the evolving debate within the marketing and production sectors about the trade-off between AI efficiency and creative integrity.
